YESTERDAY IN L.A. : THE ALCINDOR-WALTON ERA REIGNS SUPREME.

March 22, 1994: The Lakers replace Randy Pfund with Magic Johnson as coach. They win five of the next six to battle for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Then they lose nine straight. Johnson decides not come back, paving the way for Del Harris' hiring.

 avenges its two-point regular-season loss to Houston in January with a 101-69 victory over the Cougars in the NCAA Tournament semifinals at the L.A. Sports Arena. A record 15,742 watch along with those at six closed-circuit TV locations (there was no national TV broadcast). (47).

March 22, 1969: In the 88th win in the 90 games of the Lew Alcindor era at UCLA, the Bruins crush Purdue 92-72 in Louisville, Ky., to give John Wooden his fifth NCAA basketball championship. It's the third straight for senior Alcindor, who was 15-of-20 shooting for 37 points to go with 20 rebounds.

March 23, 1968: The day after beating Houston in the semifinals, UCLA's fourth NCAA basketball title comes at the L.A. Sports Arena, a 78-55 win over North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (E), South Carolina and Georgia (S), Tennessee (W), and Virginia (N). March 24, 1980: An improbable run by Larry Brown's UCLA basketball team ends in the NCAA title game with a loss to Louisville 59-54 at Indianapolis.

March 24, 1973: Pro track makes its L.A. debut as Kip Keino defeats Jim Ryan in the mile run at the International Track Association meet at the Sports Arena.

March 25, 1967: UCLA's third NCAA basketball title comes with a 79-64 win over Dayton at Louisville, Ky. Sophomore Alcindor scores 20 and Lucious Allen has 19 in the title game. The day before, UCLA beats Elvin Hayes and Houston 73-58 in the semifinals.

March 25, 1972: UCLA's sixth NCAA basketball title in a row is celebrated at the L.A. Sports Arena in an 81-76 win over Florida State. Sophomore Walton leads the way with 24 points and 20 rebounds, while Keith Wilkes scores 23 with 10 boards and Henry Bibby adds 18 points.

March 25, 1990: Loyola Marymount's emotional run through the NCAA basketball tournament There are six main NCAA Basketball Tournaments.

 advanced to the Great Eight with a 62-60 win over Alabama two days earlier. The Lions averaged an NCAA Tournament-record 105 points a game in their four appearances in that tournament.

March 25, 1978: Senior Ann Meyers guides UCLA's Billie Moore-coached women's basketball team to a 90-74 win over Maryland for the AIAW AIAW Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women  championship on the Bruins' home floor at Pauley Pavilion before 9,351. (80)

March 26, 1973: In probably the greatest individual performance in an NCAA basketball tournament final, Walton's 21-of-22 shooting for 44 points in the final against Memphis State gives UCLA its seventh title in a row. Walton's output in the 87-66 win at St. Louis was all the more impressive since the junior picked up his fourth foul with 9:27 left and the Bruins protecting an eight-point lead. It was also UCLA's 75th win in a row. (38)

March 26, 1977: With perhaps the most talented collegiate swim squad ever assembled, USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , led by John Naber, captures its fourth straight NCAA swimming title. It's the ninth career (and last) championship for coach Peter Daland. (86)

March 27, 1971: UCLA wins its fifth straight NCAA basketball title and 28th straight tournament game with a 68-62 win over Villanova in the Houston Astrodome as·tro·dome
