Especially deep in the Depression. Heck, the entire place opened just two months earlier, built for $800,000. But that's how Dr. Charles G. Strub, with the help of movie studio head Hal Roach, pulled off the first Santa Anita Handicap The Santa Anita Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in the late winter at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. It is a Grade I race for horses three years old and up, and is considered the most important race for older horses in North America during as the nation's first regularly scheduled $100,000 race. Wayne Carlander plays 59 minutes and scores 38 points with 13 rebounds. USC also beat UCLA in a double-overtime game at the Sports Arena earlier that season.
