YESTERDAY'S COUNTS SHOWED 25 PERCENT AVERAGE INCREASE IN TEAM RIDESHARE THURSDAY CARPOOLS

LOS ANGELES, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Caltrans traffic engineers who are monitoring carpools and vanpools on Thursday as part of the Team Rideshare campaign have reported a 25 percent average increase in the number of carpools in Los Angeles and Orange counties, based on historical data.
In Orange County, Caltrans reported a 38 percent increase in carpool lane usage since the Team Rideshare campaign began, and in Los Angeles County, the increase in carpools was 12 percent.
Caltrans traffic counters are monitoring congestion at selected locations to look at traffic coming into downtown Los Angeles from Orange and San Bernardino counties as well as the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys.
The Team Rideshare Thursday campaign, which will run through July 4, is aimed at helping drivers realize a decrease in the amount of time spent on freeways because of congestion. By increasing the number of people carried in each rush-hour vehicle, traffic lanes are able to do the job for which they were intended -- to move commuters efficiently. By reducing congestion, the Team Rideshare campaign also hopes to cut down on the pollution caused by cars idling in congestion.
