YEMEN - The Refining Sector Has New Projects:.


The oil refining refining, any of various processes for separating impurities from crude or semifinished materials. It includes the finer processes of metallurgy, the fractional distillation of petroleum into its commercial products, and the purifying of cane, beet, and maple sugar  sector in Yemen, which has changed little for nearly five decades, is to be expanded in a big way as private projects now look certain to materialise Verb 1. materialise - come into being; become reality; "Her dream really materialized"

. The government is supporting these projects and wants Yemen to become an important exporter of refined petroleum products.

The country at present has two refineries, at Aden and at Maarib, with a combined operating capacity of 105,000 b/d. Both are state-owned under the control of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Noun 1. mineral resources - natural resources in the form of minerals

The government is yet to move off the ground projects to expand and upgrade the two refineries. They await AWAIT, crim. law.  process which has taken much longer to materialise than expected. On May 13, 1998, Sanaa decided that a majority share in the Aden Refinery Company would be sold to local and foreign interests. Old and inefficient, the refinery has long been due for an upgrade (see profiles on following pages).

Four New Projects: There are two different refining projects proposed to be built at Ras Issa terminal, near the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah. The terminal handles the export of crude oil coming by pipeline from Maarib oilfields operated by Hunt Oil Co. of the US (see Gas Market Trends).

There are also two different projects for export refineries to be built at the port city of Mukalla in Hadhramout.
