Public-course golfers in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
and surrounding areas not only get to enjoy their favorite sport year-round because of wonderful weather, but they also can test their scores against the marks recorded by some of the finest professionals in the game.

The U.S. Golf Association is rightfully proud of the fact that this year's U.S. Open The term U.S. Open is applied to "open" United States national championships in a particular sport, in which anybody, amateur or professional, American or non-American may compete. These include:

championship will be conducted on a public course for the first time at Bethpage Black on New York's Long Island.

But public courses in this area are no stranger to golf's top professionals. Griffith Park's Wilson and Harding courses, Pasadena's Brookside No. 1 and Rancho Park GC in West Los Angeles

Not many public-course golfers are likely to win eight professional majors, as Arnold Palmer did during his Hall of Fame career on the PGA Tour. But every pub-links player has a chance to match Palmer's memorable performance in the 1961 L.A. Open at Rancho Park, where he took a 7-over-par 12 on the ninth hole a feat commemorated by a plaque on the site.

Similarly, area public course players can compare their scores with the final-round 72 Billy Casper

Or they can attempt to match the final rounds fashioned by L.A. Open winners Harry Lighthorse Cooper (66), Jimmy Thompson (68) and Jimmy Demaret (69) in respective L.A. Opens in 1937-39 at the Griffith Park facilities.

Rancho Park has hosted 16 L.A. Opens and was the site of Jack Nicklaus' PGA Tour debut in 1962, when the Golden Bear earned $33.33 for a last-place finish five months before winning his first of four U.S. Opens.

Popular Rancho Park, which averages more than 100,000 rounds a year, also was the site of five PGA (1) (Professional Graphics Adapter) An early IBM PC display standard for 3D processing with 640x480x256 resolution. It was not widely used.

But whether it's the chance to compare scores against those of the best in the game or just enjoying the sport 12 months a year, area golfers have no shortage of easily available variety when it comes to playing.

There are more than three dozen public-access courses from 18-hole to nine-hole to executive to par-3 in the San Fernando Valley and/or the nearby Santa Clarita, Simi, Conejo or Antelope valleys.
