YEAR-ROUND SCHOOL NIXED.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. The ``blended calendar'' breaks up the instructional year with more frequent and longer breaks and it aligns with the William S. Hart Union High School District. That would allow an easier transition for students from elementary to junior high school and help families with children in schools in both districts.

The school year would begin in mid-August and run until June and include a shorter summer vacation, one-week fall vacation, three-week winter vacation Winter vacation has been proposed in modern times (the 20th and 21st centuries) as a more practical alternative to summer vacation in areas that have harsh winters and mild summers.  and two-week spring vacation.

``We're going to make some people very happy and disappoint other people,'' said district Superintendent District Superintendent may be:

Mark Winger. ``But we're doing what we think is best for our students in terms of the blended nature of the calendar with the more frequent and spread-out vacations.''

If the two new elementary schools, Pico Canyon and McGrath, don't open for the 2003-04 school year as expected, the district will implement the traditional calendar at those schools for one year - a schedule in which school starts after Labor Day in September, and there are 10-week summer, two-week winter and one-week spring vacations.

In order to successfully implement the single-track calendar, the district's reorganization committee must still determine how to expand capacity at the existing schools, alter school boundaries and reassign students to balance enrollment at each campus.

All district schools will be on a blended calendar for the 2004-05 school year.

The two new elementary schools will ease the overcrowding at district schools and allow Newhall to implement the single-track schedule, which is favored by parents.

It has been the district's goal for five years to get off multitrack - a system in which children attend school on one of four schedules, or ``tracks,'' with one of the groups always on vacation - when new schools opened.

District officials will ask the board to adopt a new calendar for the 2003-04 school year at the Nov. 26 meeting.
