YEAR OF THE MONKEY CELEBRATIONS USHER IN CHINESE NEW YEAR.

Special events were held in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  on Saturday in celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year Lunar New Year may refer to the beginning of the year in several calendars. It is commonly assumed that they are all based on a lunar calendar. However, this is not the case.  and the Year of the Monkey.

Cardinal Roger Mahony His Eminence Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony (born February 27, 1936) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He currently serves as the fourth Archbishop of Los Angeles, and was elevated to the cardinalate in 1991.  of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles presided over the first Chinese New Year Chinese New Year (Simplified Chinese: ; Traditional Chinese: ; Pinyin: ChūnjiĆ©), or Spring Festival  Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is a cathedral church of the United States in the City of Los Angeles in California.  It is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles[1] and seat of its archbishop, Roger Cardinal Mahony. .

An entrance procession at the event Saturday included a Chinese New Year dragon and dancers who payed homage to their ancestors with a lantern dance and a ribbon dance.

Nearby in Chinatown, a two-day New Year's celebration was Saturday and today featuring carnival rides, food and craft vendors.

The 105th ``Golden Dragon Parade'' Saturday afternoon started at City Hall and headed down Broadway and Hill Street to Chinatown with 50 floats, bands, and the Miss L.A. Chinatown Queen and Court.

The Chinese New Year Festival at 727 North Hill Street was held Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. today, produced by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles.

Another Lunar New Year parade was Saturday in the San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire. , ending in Alhambra with a street festival.
