YEAGER TO CAP CAREER AT EDWARDS AIR SHOW.Byline: Jim Skeen Daily News Staff Writer The last military flights of aviation legend Chuck Yeager The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed YF-12A and A-12 aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. will highlight this year's open house Saturday and Sunday at Edwards. The event is being held on two days this year instead of one as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Air Force and the 50th anniversary of Yeager's X-1 plane flight that broke the sound barrier for the first time. Yeager will open the flying activities at 10 a.m. both days by cracking sonic booms in a F-15 fighter. Sunday's flight will be the 74-year-old retired brigadier general's last as a military pilot, capping more than 55 years of flying for the Air Force. The base gates will open at 7:30 a.m. both days. The Thunderbirds will cap each day's activities with performances at 3 p.m. Other highlights will include an opportunity to see a stealth bomber in flight as it makes low passes along the flight line, and two passes by the SR-71 Blackbird - one at high altitude Conventionally, an altitude above 10,000 meters (33,000 feet).
