XTI holds a license for a patented process to convert xylose into ethanol and xylitol xylitol /xy·li·tol/ (zi´li-tol) a five-carbon sugar alcohol derived from xylose and as sweet as sucrose; used as a noncariogenic sweetener and also as a sugar substitute in diabetic diets. , developed by researchers at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory and the University of Wisconsin. The goal of the collaboration is the use of biomass and other sustainable feedstocks to meet the increasing worldwide energy demand.
