Xylan announces participation in SmartShip program.

) in Philadelphia is the primary design, test and installation activity for the SmartShip Core Technology. This consists of automated subsystems providing integrated Navigation, Machinery Control and Condition-Based Maintenance Information functions that are distributed over an advanced shipwide fiber-optic switched network.

SmartShip Core Technology subsystems include Integrated Condition Assessment System, Damage Control System, Machinery Control System and Integrated Bridge System.

The first SmartShip installation is aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown, CG48, a "Ticonderoga" class AEGIS cruiser. From a networking perspective, the SmartShip is a very progressive program. The Xylan backbone network that was installed on the U.S.S. Yorktown on July 15, 1996, has the distinction of being the first shipwide ATM backbone installed on a U.S. Navy ship.

As reduced manpower and efficiencies analyses are developed and reviewed, it is anticipated that the SmartShip systems will be replicated on many additional ships.

The network architecture for the SmartShip program consists of a shipwide backbone network based on ATM switching for distribution of real-time control system and navigation traffic among dedicated, switched Ethernet connections to SmartShip consoles, workstations and engineering signal data distribution nodes.

All consoles and workstations provide distributed multifunction capability for all subsystems and have dual Ethernet interfaces using Xylan's flexible VLAN See virtual LAN.

functionality. This provides actively redundant user attachments to two separate ATM backbone switches for survivability installed throughout the ship. ATM backbone switches are connected to at least two other ATM switches for further backbone redundancy.

The backbone network hardware will be installed using multiple Xylan ATM switches with combinations of ATM and Ethernet switching in a single chassis. This will provide greater backbone flexibility and a migration path for direct ATM switch attachment of SmartShip consoles. The initial backbone design is based on OC-3 (155 Mbps), with future migration to OC-12 (622 Mbps) planned as bandwidth requirements increase.

The modular design of the Xylan OmniSwitch allows the network to expand with either ATM or Ethernet attached consoles. NSWC SmartShip network designer Kevin M. Doty is very satisfied with the Xylan networking hardware for its powerful, modular switching architecture combined with its versatile VLAN functionality that can be customized to meet the application requirements.

The advent of the Navy's newest networking design to meet the information demands of the next century, denoted as IT21, will derive the benefits from the SmartShip networking architecture to provide the foundation for the overall IT21 network integration process.

The availability of Xylan switching products on the PC-LAN PC-LAN Personal Computer Local Area Network + contract facilitates the purchase of Xylan's products for the SmartShip program.

About Xylan

In less than four years since its founding, Xylan Corp. has introduced a complete set of technologies for high-bandwidth campus switching systems. Each is powerful, and all are integrated into a single set of product platforms. Capabilities available now and in the next six months include:

-- LAN switching for Ethernet, Token Ring, Fast Ethernet and FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. ,

including ATM uplinks and any-to-any translation

-- 13.2 Gbps ATM switching, with OC-3, OC-12, DS-3, E3, DS-1, E1

and 25M ports, using advanced buffer management

-- hardware-based layer-three switching for both IP and IPX,

including RIP, OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) A routing protocol that determines the best path for routing IP traffic over a TCP/IP network based on distance between nodes and several quality parameters. , RIPII, BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) The routing protocol that is used to span autonomous systems on the Internet. It is a robust, sophisticated and scalable protocol that was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). 4 and IP multicast

-- advanced upper-layer switching protocols, including PNNI (Private Network-to-Network Interface) A routing protocol used between ATM switches in an ATM network. It lets the switches inform each other about network topology so they can make appropriate forwarding decisions. , LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.

Emulation, NHRP (Next Hop Resolution Protocol) A protocol for layer 3 switching that routes a request through traditional routers to obtain the destination address and sends the data packets via layer 2 switches.  and MPOA (MultiProtocol Over ATM) An ATM Forum standard that provides routing of legacy protocols (IP, IPX, etc.) over ATM networks. MPOA separates the routing processing from the actual forwarding.
