The network architecture for the SmartShip program consists of a shipwide backbone network based on ATM switching for distribution of real-time control system and navigation traffic among dedicated, switched Ethernet connections to SmartShip consoles, workstations and engineering signal data distribution nodes. All consoles and workstations provide distributed multifunction capability for all subsystems and have dual Ethernet interfaces using Xylan's flexible VLAN See virtual LAN. VLAN - Virtual Local Area Network functionality. This provides actively redundant user attachments to two separate ATM backbone switches for survivability installed throughout the ship. ATM backbone switches are connected to at least two other ATM switches for further backbone redundancy. This will provide greater backbone flexibility and a migration path for direct ATM switch attachment of SmartShip consoles. The initial backbone design is based on OC-3 (155 Mbps), with future migration to OC-12 (622 Mbps) planned as bandwidth requirements increase.
