Xylan and NSC join forces to extend virtual LANs across the enterprise.CALABASAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 21, 1995--Xylan Corp. Tuesday announced that Bytex, a division of Network Systems Corp., will market Xylan's switching technology. The new product will be the Bytex Enterprise LAN Switch (ELS). It will allow network managers to combine Xylan's advanced any-to- any switching with the powerful wide-area capabilities of NSC's Enterprise Routing Switch (ERS ERS, n.pr See extended rotated side-bent. ). The partners will support a common trunking protocol. This will allow Xylan's AutoTracker virtual LANs to be effectively coupled into the ERS on high-speed connections such as FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. and ATM. The ERS can then attach them to virtual LANs at remote sites. The agreement will be formally announced at Networld+Interop 95 on March 28. Shipments will begin next month. The Bytex ELS is available in five- and nine-slot versions. It supports up to 64 Ethernet and up to 48 token-ring ports. Its modular design allows any combination of token ring, Ethernet, FDDI, TP-PMD (Twisted Pair-Physical Medium Dependent) An ANSI standard for an FDDI network that uses UTP instead of optical fiber.
