Xylan Introduces Modules, Features for Omni Switch/Router.

CALABASAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1998--Xylan Corp. (Nasdaq:XYLN) Monday announced the Omni Switch/Router, a new Gigabit switch that offers the most comprehensive system available for desktop and backbone switching.

OmniS/R is a new switch that offers a 22 Gbps backplane An interconnecting device that has sockets for printed circuit boards to plug into.

Passive and Active
Although resistors may be used, a "passive" backplane adds no processing in the circuit.
, 12 Mpps of routing and more than 40 new desktop, backbone and WAN modules. (For a high-level overview of Omni Switch/Router functionality, see Xylan's news release titled "Xylan xylan /xy·lan/ (zi´lan) any of a group of pentosans composed of xylose residues; major structural constituents of wood, straw, and bran.  introduces industry's most complete Gigabit switch: the Omni Switch/Router").

New 1000/100/10 Ethernet

OmniS/R includes Xylan's first Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  capabilities. Two-port and four-port Gigabit Ethernet modules provide Gigabit backbones and high-speed links to servers. Up to eight of the modules can be used in OmniS/R to create a 32-port Gigabit Ethernet switch.

Also debuting is a new 32-port 10/100 Ethernet module. A single OmniS/R can support 256 autosensing 10/100 ports, making it a very dense, inexpensive wiring closet The central distribution or servicing point for cables in a network. See MDF and wire center.  switch. The 10/100 module lists for less than $220 per port -- a dramatically low price for a modular switch.

Token Ring A local area network (LAN) access method developed by IBM. Conforming to the IEEE 802.5 standard, Token Ring uses a token ring access method and connects up to 255 nodes in a star topology at 4, 16 or 100 Mbps.  and FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers.  Support, Too

A new 32-port token ring module is also available. OmniS/R can provide a complete token ring switching system or a graceful migration path to 10/100 Ethernet at the desk and Gigabit Ethernet in the backbone. A single OmniS/R can support 256 token ring ports. The token ring module lists for less than $350 per port -- also a dramatically low price for a modular switch.

Many of today's backbones still use FDDI, and many network managers would like to transition those backbones to Gigabit Ethernet. OmniS/R supports one-port and two-port FDDI modules, which can interoperate See interoperable.  in the same switch with 10/100 and with Gigabit Ethernet. Coupled with Xylan's any-to-any switching, these provide a migration path from FDDI to Gigabit Ethernet.

Integrated WAN Switching

The Omni Switch/Router combines a broad array of WAN modules with high-performance routing See HPR. . As a result, OmniS/R can completely replace a router for high-speed access to wide area networks. That reduces the cost of the network, simplifies management and improves performance.

OmniS/R's 20 WAN modules offer an impressive range of interfaces:
-- fractional T1
-- fractional E1
-- E3 ATM
-- DS-3 ATM
-- OC-3c / STM-1 ATM
-- OC-12 / STM-4 ATM
-- frame relay (9.6 Kbps - 2 Mbps)
-- PPP (9.6 Kbps - 2 Mbps)
-- ISDN BRI
-- Packet-over-SONET / SDH

Routing Performance and Protocols

Each OmniS/R switching module is available with the new HRE-X HRE-X Hardware Routing Engine-Xylan , a high-performance ASIC-based hardware routing engine that delivers 12 Mpps per switch. The HRE-X supports both IP and IPX (Internetwork Packet EXchange) The network layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the IP layer in TCP/IP, it contains a network address and allows messages to be routed to a different network or subnet.  routing, with up to 256,000 route entries and up to 64,000 next-hop destinations. And unlike most Gigabit switches that offer layer-three switching, OmniS/R supports a broad range of protocols:
-- IP RIP
-- IPX RIP
-- IP RIP II
-- OSPF
-- OSPF - multipath
-- BGP-4
-- CIDR
-- IGMP
-- DVMRP
-- VRRP
-- BootP Relay
-- DHCP/DNS Server
-- IP Over ATM
-- IP Over SONET / SDH
-- ICMP router discovery
-- NTP

About Xylan

Xylan is one of the leading campus switching companies in the world; its products combine LAN switching
''This article addresses packet switching in computer networks.

LAN switching is a form of packet switching used in local area networks. Switching technologies are crucial to network design, or to that minority of LANs that are used outside the home.
, ATM switching, layer-three switching and wide area switching over a wide range of interfaces and media. Xylan's switches are distinguished by advanced architectures and chip designs, and by any-to-any switching. The same XOS XOS Xylooligosaccharides

 services.

Xylan's Switched Network Services initiative takes switching to the next step: a comprehensive set of services, including DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Software that automatically assigns temporary IP addresses to client stations logging into an IP network. It eliminates having to manually assign permanent "static" IP addresses. DHCP software runs in servers and routers. , network address translation, LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) A protocol used to access a directory listing. LDAP support is implemented in Web browsers and e-mail programs, which can query an LDAP-compliant directory. , RADIUS, DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the , multicast switching and routing, RSVP (ReSerVation Protocol) A communications protocol that signals a router to reserve bandwidth for real time transmission. RSVP is designed to clear a path for audio and video traffic, eliminating annoying skips and hesitations. , wide area compression, broadcast management, policy-based configuration and multilayer accounting. Many of these services are already shipping.
