Module Offers Service Providers Multiple Protocol Support

Xircom, Inc. (Nasdaq:XIRC), the leading provider of mobile information access solutions, today announced the availability of Xircom's PortStation(TM) ADSL USB Modem module based on GlobeSpan's Titanium(TM) ADSL chipset. The first broadband product for the award winning PortStation system, the ADSL Modem module provides asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  digital subscriber line See DSL.

(communications, protocol) Digital Subscriber Line - (DSL, or Digital Subscriber Loop, xDSL - see below) A family of digital telecommunications protocols designed to allow high speed data communication over the existing copper telephone lines between end-users and
(ADSL) Internet access through a small form-factor, plug and play ADSL solution for the home or office environment.

Customers can easily use this smaller-sized, expandable, mix-and-match connectivity system to take advantage of the generous bandwidths of broadband technologies such as ADSL. With over 100 times the download speed of a 56Kbps modem, ADSL provides home office, small business and commuter markets with high-speed information access solutions. Because the module supports a USB USB

connection to the computer instead of Ethernet, it makes customer self-installation a reality. This gives Service Providers the additional benefit of being able to migrate away from having to provide expensive, labor-intensive "truck rolls" every time that a new subscriber is installed.

The PortStation ADSL USB Modem supports Annex A, B, and C which allows it to be used in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Japan. Expansion capabilities allow users to easily add modules such as the Home Phone Networking Alliance (HPNA See HomePNA. ), and wireless LAN 802.11 to quickly expand the PortStation system into a gateway. This gateway allows users to access high-speed Internet access from virtually any connection in their home or office. Other PortStation modules can be used to expand the system and create home networks with multiple PC shared resources such as printers, scanners and other peripherals.

"The Xircom PortStation ADSL USB Modem stands out from other ADSL solutions because it can be expanded into a high-speed gateway to the Internet and shared by multiple computers in the home or office," says David Murray, Director of Marketing for Port Expansion Products at Xircom. "Setting up the system is as easy as snapping in one of many available add-on modules and since it is USB, installation is a non-event."

Xircom is also a strong supporter of the recently announced OpenDSL initiative. The standard promotes openness through the interoperability of multi-vendor DSL DSL
