Xionics PS3, the Next Generation PostScript 3 Solution, Ships to Five Major OEMs; World's Best-Selling PostScript Solution Empowers Today's Connected Office.

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1999--Printing from a computer is about to get easier for millions of people who work in "the connected office" with the introduction of Xionics PS3(TM) by Xionics Document Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ

Today's connected office requires that each printing device must be compatible across the extended enterprise. It also must accommodate the growing number and features of printing peripherals without compromising performance, quality, or reliability. "Whatever the task, today's office worker expects the printer to handle more-full-color spectrums, photo-quality output, and more complex Internet and presentation media," said Xionics President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Pete Simone. "Meeting this demand for consistent print capability whatever or wherever the device, was the reason we developed Xionics PS3."

Xionics PS3, the newest module of the IPS/2000(TM) system, is a fully compatible PostScript(R) 3 solution that builds on Xionics' best-selling emulation of PostScript Level 2--Xionics PS2(TM). The popular IPS/2000 system features a fully integrated dual language system that can process the page description languages A high-level language for commanding a printer to print text and graphics on a page. The two major languages are Adobe's PostScript and HP's PCL, which are device independent and supported by most every printer. , PostScript and PCL (Printer Command Language) The page description language for HP LaserJet printers. It has become a de facto standard used in many printers and typesetters. PCL Level 5, introduced with the LaserJet III in 1990, also supports Compugraphic's Intellifont scalable fonts. , that are standard in today's office. This results in optimized code size and performance and ensures print compatibility of document peripherals in the connected office.

Xionics currently has more printers with its PostScript-compatible solution shipping to the office marketplace than any other supplier. This puts the new Xionics PS3 in line to be the dominant page description language (PDL See page description language.

"In developing Xionics PS3, we worked closely with our OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  customers to produce a PostScript 3-compatible solution that includes feature compatibility with Adobe PostScript 3," said Simone. "Ultimately, the consumer will benefit from a Xionics solution inside their peripherals."

PS3 Shipping

Xionics PS3 is now shipping to OEM manufacturers for implementation in a new generation of printers, digital copiers and multifunction peripherals. Xionics was the first to successfully launch a PostScript Level 1 emulation, and the company's PostScript Level 2 emulation is now the best selling PostScript-compatible product in the world.

Manufacturers and partners who have implemented Xionics' PostScript 2 compatible printing technology include Hewlett-Packard, which is the de facto standard Hardware or software that is widely used, but not endorsed by a standards organization. Contrast with de jure standard.

In developing its PS3 product, Xionics teamed up with two of the leading font suppliers in the industry, Agfa-Gevaert and Bitstream. Xionics PS3 incorporates Agfa's Universal Font Scaling Technology(R) 4.0, which provides OEMs with a faster time to market and real feature differentiation in their products.

Xionics PS3 interpreter will support the feature sets most in demand by the mainstream office computing market. Highlights of the Xionics PS3 print technology include:

-- Smooth Shading - streamlines host commands resulting in smoother
     gradients and improved performance.

-- Functions - allows programs to share functions by recognizing a
     new PostScript construct.

-- Masked Images - reduces rendering time for clipped images (e.g.:
     web images).

-- Filters - aids image compression/decompression with the addition
     of several filters.

-- IdiomSet - allows a Xionics PS3-enabled printer to recognize and
     optimize PostScript Level 2 constructs.

-- Miscellaneous Graphics Operators - improves some graphics
processing and page output operations such as save and restore,
     clippath and copypage.

-- Extended Font Sets - ensures compatibility with the resident font
sets for all leading desktop operating systems, including some
PCL fonts not supported by Adobe Systems' PostScript 3.
