at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention. His presentation will provide an update on the Mono Project and highlight early Mono adoption. The Mono(TM) Project, for which de Icaza is project leader, is a community initiative spearheaded by Ximian to develop an open source version of the Microsoft .NET development platform for Linux and UNIX. Specifically, de Icaza will discuss Mono v0.25, released last week, as well as early uses of Mono Project components by Tipic, SourceGear Corporation, Winfessor and OpenLink Software to quickly deliver their Microsoft .NET products on the Linux and UNIX platforms.

The O'Reilly Open Source Convention is being held at the Portland Marriott Downtown in Portland, Ore., from July 7-11. De Icaza will deliver his keynote address, "Beyond .NET: The Mono Project," on Friday, July 11 at 9:30 a.m.

"As the Mono Project was introduced two years ago at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention, it is very fitting that we are able to meet at this year's OSCON OSCON O'Reilly Open Source Convention

event to reflect on its accomplishments," said de Icaza. "Mono shows the power and innovation of the open source approach, as a community of over 150 developers worldwide has already produced the foundation for enabling several companies to quickly build and deliver .NET applications across platforms. I'm looking forward to OSCON to show our progress to date and to discuss what's next for the project."

As de Icaza will note in his address, several companies are already using pre-release Mono technology to create Microsoft .NET applications once and execute them on multiple operating systems, thereby dramatically reducing development costs. These examples include:

-- Winfessor, an instant messaging (IM) solutions provider, will

use Mono to build cross-platform custom secure IM solutions
