Xi Graphics Shows 3D Linux X Server in Evans & Sutherland Booth at CeBIT.

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 1999--Xi Graphics, Inc. announces the demonstration of its 3D Accelerated-X(TM) Display Server for Linux and OpenGL on high-end Evans & Sutherland graphics hardware.

The new technology is the second release of Xi Graphics' 3D Tech Demo and is on display March 20-24 in the E & S booth at the CeBIT show in Hannover, Germany. The 3D Accelerated-X product is running on Evans & Sutherland's new AccelGALAXY card targeted at the professional user.

Thomas Roell, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and Chief Technical Officer of Xi Graphics, says the server being demonstrated this week at CeBIT with the cooperation of Evans & Sutherland is the precursor precursor /pre·cur·sor/ (pre´kur-ser) something that precedes. In biological processes, a substance from which another, usually more active or mature, substance is formed. In clinical medicine, a sign or symptom that heralds another.  of a new 3D product line that will be unveiled in the near future. "We are pleased to be able to demonstrate workstation class professional 3D graphics on Linux and Intel hardware," comments Roell. "Having multiple high-resolution windows open simultaneously is necessary in the workstation environment, whereas a single window with low resolution is sufficient for gamers," says Roell.

Niraj Swarup, vice president of marketing for board products at Evans & Sutherland, explains that AccelGALAXY supports the full range of professional graphics applications, including digital content creation The development of newsworthy, educational and entertainment material for distribution over the Internet or other electronic media. Visualization is used in computer-aided design (CAD) to render screen images into 3D models that can be viewed from all , animation, entertainment, design engineering and simulation. "The beauty of the REALimage technology is that all of these AccelGALAXY features are available simultaneously with no degradation in performance even when all features are turned on," says Swarup. The AccelGALAXY offers users a rich set of features, including support for double-buffered resolutions up to 1920 x 1080, a 24-bit Z buffer A memory buffer in a graphics accelerator that is used to speed up the rendering of 3D images. It holds the depth of each pixel (z-axis), and as an image is drawn, each pixel is matched against the z buffer location. , 24-bit color, double buffering A programming technique that uses two buffers to speed up a computer that can overlap I/O with processing. Data in one buffer is being processed while the next set of data is read into the other one. , full stereo support and local texture storage for up to 32MB. Introduced in the spring of 1999 at 500 MHz, the Pentium III architecture was similar to the Pentium II with the addition of 70 new instructions optimized for multimedia (see SSE).  and Pentium III Xeon processors. Other key features include support for double-buffered overlays, window IDs, texture mapping In computer graphics, the application of a type of surface to a 3D image. A texture can be uniform, such as a brick wall, or irregular, such as wood grain or marble. The common method is to create a 2D bitmapped image of the texture, called a "texture map," which is then "wrapped around" , stencils, alpha blending In computer graphics, the combining of the alpha channel with other layers in an image in order to show translucency. The alpha channel is an additional eight bits used with each pixel in a 32-bit graphics system that can represent 256 levels of translucency. , per-pixel depth cueing and fog.

The 3D Technology Demo A technology demo is a prototype, rough example or an otherwise incomplete version of a product, put together with the primary purpose of showcasing the idea, performance, method or the features of the product.  is a controlled release for developers who are currently deploying OpenGL applications and are interested in moving to Linux/UNIX on the PC platform. Support for several initial 3D graphics chipsets, such as Glint Delta/MX, Permedia II, Ticket2Ride IV, i740 and SiS 6326, is included. Additionally, the 3D Demo server will be available for use on Intel hardware with Linux, UnixWare7 and Solaris/x86, v2.7, v2.6 and v2.5.1 operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap.  in Intel Hardware.
