Xerox Donates $1 Million to National Underground Railroad Freedom Center to Establish John Parker Library; Gift Brings Freedom Center's Fundraising Efforts to $101 Million.

The National Underground Railroad Underground Railroad, in U.S. history, loosely organized system for helping fugitive slaves escape to Canada or to areas of safety in free states.  has donated $1 million to help establish the Freedom Center's John Parker The name John Parker may refer to any of these people:
  • John Parker (Captain), (1729–1775), captain of minutemen in Battle of Lexington and Concord
  • John Parker (delegate), (1758–1832), South Carolina delegate to the Continental Congress (1786-1788)
 Library. The gift was presented by Joseph Cahalan, vice president of The Xerox Foundation, and brings the Freedom Center's Capital Campaign total fundraising efforts to over $101 million. The new library will house a variety of research tools, including a digital archive of Underground Railroad materials as well as a genealogy research area.

"Xerox has pledged its commitment to the Freedom Center and because of the company's generosity and vision in recognizing the national impact of the Freedom Center, the John Parker Library is a reality," said Dr. Spencer Crew, Freedom Center Executive Director and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "The John Parker Library will house a digital collection of Underground Railroad documents, including the records of Cincinnati's Union Baptist Church. It will be a remarkable resource."

"Building on our rich heritage of promoting diversity, Xerox hopes to help provide access to the unique documents and resources of the John Parker Library so everyone can learn the remarkable story of the Underground Railroad and the achievements of those who risked their lives and liberty for the freedom of others."

 and foundry master who purchased his own freedom and then used his talents to help an estimated one thousand others attain freedom as well. A resident of Ripley, Ohio Ripley is a village in Brown County, Ohio, United States, 50 miles southeast of Cincinnati, along the Ohio River. The population was 1,745 at the 2000 census. History  from 1850 until his death in 1900, Parker was an inventor who obtained patents for several of his creations.
