Mr. Schulte continues with his dissertation, "Ceramic membranes and systems for micro filtration are being used for separation and filtration of complex industrial liquid and gas flows. I established collaborative relationships with more strategically established manufactures for the commercialization of low-cost ceramic membranes. The potential is just behind imagination and a perfect use would be: I just give an ad-hoc example with Isopropanol (IPA) and should be considered only as food for the debate.

To become a cost-leader on some chemicals and commodities it could be a financial interest to obtain off Spec material. True novel, low-cost membranes separation technologies it is very doable to obtain a high-grade product and sell it at market prices. I know obsolete facilities that are already in place and the price regenerated Isopropanol (IPA) is approx $1100 MT.

Isopropanol (IPA) is widely used in the semi-conductor industry to clean wafers, and tetrafluropropanol (TFP) is used as solvent for coating in CD-R manufacturing. There are about 8000 tons of waste IPA and 1260 tons of waste TFP in Taiwan each year. Obviously, from both economic and environmental points of view, recovery and reuse of these two organic solvents are of great importance. Removal of water (dehydration) from the waste solvents is required to allow the recovered solvents to have enough purity for reuse. Distillation could be a choice for solvent dehydration; however, it is an energy-consuming process and cannot break azeotropes formed in the IPA-water and TFP-water mixtures. Therefore, it is essential to have a more efficient process for dehydration of IPA and TFP.

The best possible solution is to use: Tubular ceramic pervaporation membranes with long-term operation stability or polymeric membranes. The process requires up to 70% less energy than the distillation process and is about 50% cheaper and has a substantial higher productivity within a shorter timeframe with an easier process resulting with a better product.

The novel, low-cost membranes separation technology is also relevant for condensation reactions in general (equilibrium limited reactions). Condensation reactions are a significant group of reactions commonly found in the chemical industry. The estimated turnover (1990) in Europe of products of this type of reactions exceeds 4,000 M Euro per year.

Initial Pilot scale R&D and demonstration will be needed for client implementation. In more than 100 other applications this new technology seems interesting with a potential of more than 50,000 m2 membrane areas. The current annual turnover value for new products such as Dehydration of isopropanol can be up to 100 M Euro."
