Xircom Inc. went on a $36 million shopping spree Monday, announcing the purchase of a line of products and an entire company.

Thousand Oaks-based Xircom will take a charge of $3 million to $4 million against its earnings this quarter to cover the $13.25 million acquisition of the Rex line of electronic organizers See PDA.  from Franklin Electronic Publishers Franklin Electronic Publishers (formerly Franklin Computer Corporation) is an American consumer electronics manufacturer based in Burlington, New Jersey, founded in 1981. In addition, the company will trade 323,905 shares of its own stock for all outstanding shares of Entregas Technologies, a private company from Lake Forest in Orange County.

At Monday's closing stock price of $42.313 per share, the total price tag comes to $13.7 million for the computer cable and connector maker.

Xircom Chief Executive Dirk Gates said the Rex product line will expand Xircom's offerings, which already include cards to allow local and remote network access for notebook computers A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous.  and compact cards that do the same for hand-held units.

The Rex line is made up of credit card-sized organizers priced from $100 to $200 that store personal information.
