 XIRCOM ANNOUNCES ENHANCED DRIVER SUPPORT
 FOR ITS POCKET ETHERNET ADAPTERS
 Version 2.0 Boosts Performance and
Extends Support for Enhanced Parallel Port
CALABASAS, Calif., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Xircom (NASDAQ: XIRC), the leader in external connectivity solutions for local area networks (LANs) announced Software Release Version 2.0 for its Pocket Ethernet Adapter II product family.
Version 2.0 enhances the performance of Xircom's Pocket Ethernet Adapter II products up to 20 percent over Version 1.02. Support for the Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) is incorporated in Version 2.0 as a standard driver. Previously, support for EPP was provided separately to customers by Xircom. In comparison tests between personal computers with docking stations using internal network interface cards and EPP- capable notebook computers using Xircom's Pocket Ethernet Adapter II, the performance of Version 2.0 with EPP matched the performance of one of the most commonly used internal Ethernet network interface cards.
Dirk Gates, president and chief executive officer, Xircom, said, "With Version 2.0, our customers now benefit from increased performance when connecting to a network through the parallel port. Additionally, it is our intent to continue to maintain compatibility with our extensive list of network operating systems. In Version 2.0 for our Pocket Ethernet Adapter II products, we have expanded this list to include support for OS/2 Release 1.3 to meet the needs of many of our corporate customers."
Gates continued, "Version 2.0 plus the enhanced parallel port removes the performance concerns sometimes attributed to parallel ports producing a no compromise connectivity solution."
The Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP) is a technology developed by Xircom and Zenith Data Systems (ZDS) to significantly increase parallel port data throughput. EPP is implemented by Intel in the 25MHz 82360SL I/O companion chip for Intel386 SL CPU systems. Numerous leading computer manufacturers such as ZDS, Compaq, Dell and NEC have announced next- generation notebook computers that incorporate the 386SL microprocessor.
The parallel port is a universal method of networking notebook and laptop personal computers without the need for docking stations. EPP technology also makes it possible for the introduction in the near future of EPP-capable peripherals, such as laser printers, external disk drives and tape backup units, capable of higher speeds through the parallel port when used with EPP-capable notebook and laptop computers.
Support for Xircom's Parallel Port Multiplexor (PPX) has been integrated into Version 2.0 allowing for automatic configuration for the PPX during installation. A separate driver for the PPX is no longer required.
The new software will be shipping with the Pocket Ethernet Adapter II in May and will also be available to registered users free of charge by accessing Xircom's Bulletin Board Systems. Customers can also contact Xircom's Customer Support at 800-874-4428 or 818-878-7600 from outside the United States.
