 XEROX ENGINEERING SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES HIGH-PERFORMANCE
SYSTEM SOLUTION FOR ENGINEERING DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT
ANAHEIM, Calif., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- A fully networked, electronic, engineering document management system designed for companies that handle engineering documents in multi-media formats was announced today by Xerox Engineering Systems.
Xerox DocuPlex, which will have worldwide delivery and support, is a dedicated open system that enables users to store, retrieve, manage, distribute and edit engineering documents, regardless of how the documents were created or their existing format. Paper documents and aperture cards can be scanned into the DocuPlex database, which also accepts other engineering document formats such as raster and vector images and text files.
The DocuPlex database provides configuration and revision control, ensuring that a copy of every version of a document is stored and maintained in sequence. This feature assists users in identifying the most recent version of a document easily. A document status code controls revisions to documents, indicating whether changes are permitted.
"DocuPlex is the definitive system solution for storing, retrieving, manipulating and distributing engineering documents," said Doug Foran, manager, DocuPlex Business Team. "DocuPlex also allows companies with large volumes of complex engineering data to make a seamless transition from manual to electronic document management methods. By providing networked, point-of-need access to documents, DocuPlex can help increase operational efficiency, giving people information when and where they need it."
The system is equipped with a relational database that establishes linkages between stored documents that are related to one another. Through a graphical tree structure, which is unique to DocuPlex, users are able to view diagrams that graphically depict the relationship between documents that represent the product structure of an overall design.
The system's relational database structure also gives users the ability -- on a single database -- to store and associate text files with drawings. Through the graphical tree structure, a drawing and its corresponding documentation can be identified and retrieved easily.
As drawings are added, tree structures can be updated on-line. Changes made to existing documents are automatically updated on the tree. In addition, DocuPlex allows users to search the system's database for stored documents using the graphical tree editor or by searching for specific document attributes.
"DocuPlex is an expandable, open system that adapts to customers' needs, not the reverse," said Foran. "It's an evolutionary product that doesn't require users to change the way they're currently doing business."
Editing features designed to facilitate document management include optional raster editor for modifying scanned images and a comprehensive computer-aided-design (CAD) editor that allows documents to be created directly within DocuPlex. Documents containing only text information can be updated using the standard system text editor. Users also have the capability to make mass changes to groups of documents through a batch registration feature or to revise configuration data using the DocuPlex tree editor.
Stored documents can be distributed in several ways. DocuPlex provides networked access to printers and plotters for hard-copy output. Electronic copies can be sent to workstations or remote locations.
The system's graphical user interface provides easy access to all DocuPlex applications. The desktop interface allows users to customize and reconfigure menus to suit specific purposes. It is designed to be understood intuitively even by users who are not computer-literate.
DocuPlex comes ready to connect to any existing Ethernet network and runs on Solaris by Sun Microsystems. The basic system components for DocuPlex consists of workstations, servers, Xerox DocuPlex software, document storage options, scanners, printers and plotters. Software Toolkits are available to integrate existing hardware into the DocuPlex systems and to develop additional applications software.
Other DocuPlex options include software products for linking other software systems, adding new icon applications and importing or exporting data for use in other applications. Multiple mass storage options and a system mail facility also are available.
Pricing is determined by the DocuPlex system components ordered. Application engineers from Xerox Engineering Systems work with each customer to plan, estimate and implement the system installation. Customers requiring additional assistance can call a DocuPlex hotline or attend training courses offered by Xerox Engineering Systems.
DocuPlex is backed by the Xerox Total Customer Satisfaction Guarantee. Under terms of the guarantee, for up to three years after purchase customers can decide for themselves whether the system is performing to their satisfaction.
National order-taking for DocuPlex begins immediately through the Xerox Engineering Systems direct sales force. Delivery will be 90 days after the order is taken.
