 XEROX COPIERS RECEIVE TOP HONORS FROM INDUSTRY CONSULTING FIRM;
 GOLD MEDALS REFLECT USERS' PREFERENCES
 ROCHESTER, N.Y., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- In an Olympic week, Xerox (NYSE: XRX) took high honors and captured gold, silver, and bronze medals as its copiers topped a national user preference survey administered by an independent research firm.
 The Xerox 5090 duplicator, the 5100 high performance copier, and the 5065 work-group copier have been named gold medalists in their respective classes in the Summer 1992 issue of "Hanson's Guidelines." The Xerox 5034 convenience copier and the 1090 Marathon copier received silver medals. The 5028 convenience copier received a bronze medal.
 It was the fourth consecutive time the 5090 and 5065 received gold medals in the survey.
 "Hanson's Guidelines," an industry rating guide published by Perceptual Evaluations, Inc., is the copier industry's recognized authority in ranking copier performance based on user preference. Perceptual Evaluations is based in Setauket, N.Y.
 "Not only are we honored by these awards from a leading industry consulting firm, but more importantly, we are gratified that these products have earned the praise of our customers," said Thomas Dolan, vice president and general manager of departmental copying for the Office Document Products division of Xerox. "As our number one corporate priority, customer satisfaction remains the touchstone of quality at Xerox."
 The awards, which originated in 1985, are based on the results of a series of tailored surveys sent to copier users over the course of a year. The surveys cover approximately 80 factors including machine reliability; copy quality; consistency of copy quality over a period of time; machine productivity; user friendliness; and the efficiency of the machine's operating systems, including its document feeding, sorting, zoom reduction and enlargement, and two-sided copying.
 The surveys are computer tabulated and a relative customer satisfaction index is determined. The machines are then compared to competitive products based on an overall satisfaction index.
 "The only real final test for a copier comes from the user," said Richard E. Hanson, president of Perceptual Evaluations and publisher of "Hanson's Guidelines." "We act as a conduit to help users learn how their peers have evaluated specific equipment."
 A first-time gold medal winner, the Xerox 5100 high performance copier was cited with "superior ratings for reliability, service, initial-copy quality, user friendliness, productivity, and operating systems." The 5100 was introduced by Xerox in February, 1991.
 The Xerox 5090 duplicator, introduced in May of 1988, was ranked for the fourth consecutive period as top copier in the 135-plus copy volume range. According to Hanson, "Experienced managers continue to rate the 5090 as having superior copy quality with an excellent zoom system. Its performance/value also was rated superior."
 The 5065 work-group copier also received top honors for the fourth consecutive period. Users found the 5065's overall copy quality, user friendliness, and the zoom and duplexing systems to be "superior." They also cited the machine's performance/value ratio as well above average. The 5065 was introduced by Xerox in March, 1990.
