X2000 TO RESUME PASSENGER SERVICE BETWEEN WASHINGTON AND NEW YORK

WASHINGTON, July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Travelers between Washington, D.C., and New York again will be able to experience the future of rail technology when the X2000 high speed tilting train resumes regular Amtrak passenger service next month.
X2000 is the high speed tilting train developed by Asea Browne Boveri Inc. (ABB). ABB's unique technology makes X2000 the most advanced high speed train specifically designed to operate on the kind of existing tracks most common in the United States.
Amtrak will operate X2000 in Metroliner Service on the Northeast Corridor from Aug. 4 through Sept. 24. More than 25,000 passengers rode X2000 on the Northeast Corridor during its previous revenue service demonstration from Feb. 1 through May 7.
X2000 will operate as Metroliner 106 Monday through Friday. The train will leave Washington at 9 a.m. and arrive in New York at 11:55 a.m. The return trip to Washington on Metroliner train 117 will depart from New York's Penn Station at 2 p.m., arriving at 4:55 p.m.
Amtrak also will operate X2000 on three Saturdays, Aug. 14 and 28 and Sept. 11. The X2000 will depart Washington on these three dates as Metroliner train 206 at 9:30 a.m., arriving in New York at 12:25 p.m. The return trip to Washington on Metroliner train 221 will depart New York Penn Station at 5:30 p.m. arriving at 8:29 p.m.
X2000's return to passenger service follows a unique national demonstration of high speed rail. Since mid-May, X2000 has travelled from coast to coast, visiting 85 cities in 18 states, including the corridors identified by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) as having the greatest potential for high speed rail. The national tour was conducted at the invitation of state transportation officials and was co-sponsored by the states, ABB, the FRA and Southern Pacific and Santa Fe railroads.
The tour began May 11 at the Elmira Heights, N.Y., manufacturing facility of ABB Traction Inc., the U.S. rail equipment subsidiary of ABB. If ABB is selected to manufacture Amtrak's new high speed trains, they would be manufactured in New York.
The national demonstration was coordinated by Amtrak, which has been evaluating X2000 since October in technical tests and in passenger service. The demonstration has highlighted X2000's ability to reduce travel time substantially between cities while operating on existing tracks. Because of its radial steering technology, X2000 is able to travel through curves at speeds up to 40 percent greater than conventional trains. X2000 also can travel up to 20 percent faster than current Metroliner high speed trains on straight track. To assure passenger comfort, a computerized tilting system banks each car to counter centrifugal forces while the train travels through curves at high speeds.
In the nine months that X2000 has been demonstrated in the United States, the train has proven itself to be extremely reliable. X2000 has travelled more than 70,000 miles in testing, passenger service and the national tour without missing a trip or being late due to mechanical problems.
The train also has received an extremely enthusiastic reception from the public. More than 135,000 people have ridden X2000 or toured the train in its public displays.
Tickets for X2000 service between Washington and New York are available at regular Metroliner coach fares. Complete schedule information can be obtained and reservations can be made by calling Amtrak at 1-800-USA-RAIL.
