The event, featuring two eight-man teams of East and West Coast surfers, will be held Aug. 9 in Huntington Beach, a week before the X Games start in full force primarily at Staples Center. X Games general manager Chris Stiepock calls surfing ``the original action sport. Each team has three timeouts, usually taken during lulls in the wave sets or while teams paddle out. Team coaches determine which foursome will head out based on matchups, surf conditions, rider's strengths, etc. ``Never before has there been a surf contest that encouraged teamwork,'' said Brad Gerlach, a retired pro surfer who formed the National Surf League and its unique format.
