worldwide have voted this one-of-a-kind coaster as the ``best of the best in 2002.''

``It's really unprecedented for a coaster to receive so many awards in one year of operation,'' said Andy Gallardo, Magic Mountain spokesman, adding it usually takes several years to receive this type of recognition. ``So many people have come out to try X. It's such a revolutionary ride and has quickly gone to the top of so many lists.''

That list includes ``Best of What's New,'' by Popular Science Magazine; ``Best New Attraction,'' by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) [www.IAAPA.org] Founded in 1918, IAAPA is the largest international trade association for permanently situated amusement facilities worldwide. ; and ``Overall Ride of the Year and Steel Coaster of the Year,'' by ThemeParkCritic.com.

``No matter what preconceived ideas you may have about what this ride is like, from Web sites, photos, other riders or just watching it cycle, it will not even come close to the ride experience itself,'' said Jodi Malone of American Coaster Enthusiasts in Valencia.

X was designed to break all the rules, with its vehicles independently spinning at 360 degrees forward and backward on separate axes. The 2 1/2- minute ride begins with a 200-foot climb facing the sky before flipping over head first, facing the thrill seekers down for a near vertical plummet toward the ground.

Reaching 76 mph, the rush continues as riders fly through a massive 185- foot raven turn performing several acrobatic flips while blazing the rails of the 3,600-foot twisting steel maze.

But there's more. Just when enthusiasts didn't think there could be another thrill ride, Six Flags is unveiling its newest coaster, Scream, this spring - breaking a Guinness Book world record for the most coasters at a park.

It's the first floorless ride to hit Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , with no track above riders' heads and no car surrounding their sides.

``It's entirely a unique experience,'' Gallardo said. ``You feel like a giant hood ornament atop a truck flying down a freeway.''
