Wyle Labs reports earnings doubled as its reorganization plan A scheme authorized by federal law and promulgated by the president whereby he or she alters the structure of federal agencies to promote government efficiency and economy through a transfer, consolidation, coordination, authorization, or abolition of functions.  'gradually takes hold'

The returns represent the fourth consecutive quarter of higher net income for the El Segundo-based company. They are impressive considering the generally stagnant sales of the computer products recently.

For the three months ended July 31, net income was $3.1 million, up from $1.5 million in the second quarter of 1989. Sales rose 12 percent to $113.4 million.

For the first half, profit climbed even higher, to $6.1 million. SAles were up 9 percent to $222.0 million.

President and Chief Executive Charles Clough said the success is owing to a mid-1980s reorganization "that's been gradually taking hold."

In 1984, while competing with Hamilton-Avnet, Arrow Electronics and other big national distributors, Wyle chose to narrow its broad sales line to favor only semiconductors and computer systems, customized for buyers.

"The investments we made for those two are no longer are a drain on our profitability in 1990," said Clough. Wyle gained clients such as Hughes Aircraft Co., Hewlett Packard and Digital Equipment, to become the largest semiconductor wholesaler in the Western United States Noun 1. western United States - the region of the United States lying to the west of the Mississippi River

.

Among the top eight American distributors, Wyle's market share increased from 6.2 percent to 8.3 percent nationally, Clough told the Buisness Journal. The real grooth is far steeper, however, because Wyle sells only in a few niches and only in the West, he added.

"Record semiconductor sales were led by shipments of high-complexity products, particularly user-configurable devices, ASICs, and microprocessors," Clough said in a prepared statement. "Increased demand for these products more than offset weakness in commodity memory devices, which have been under severe price pressure."

During the second quarter Wyle was awarded a four-year contract valued at $17 million for operations support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services  to the Air Force Astronautics astronautics: see space science.

Clough said current demand indicates Wyle's second-half sales and earnings will exceed those of 1989's first half.
