WorldSoft previews OpenDoc container application; WorldWrite OpenDoc container to be completed by end of 1996.SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 1996--WorldSoft Corp. today unveiled a pre-release version of WorldWrite for Macintosh that can contain and embed active OpenDoc parts The original name for OpenDoc components, which were renamed Live Objects. Company representatives demonstrated the container application See container and OLE container. on stage with Apple Computer at Apple's WorldWide Developer's Conference at the San Jose Convention Center. "WorldSoft is committed to supporting OpenDoc. While our container application is still in development, it clearly demonstrates the powerful user benefits and possibilities made available through the OpenDoc architecture," said WorldSoft President Paul Kewene-Hite. "Making WorldWrite an OpenDoc container will allow us to add functionality to WorldWrite without requiring that we reengineer the entire application. OpenDoc will therefore enable us to offer dramatically increased benefits and customized solutions to Macintosh users by adding additional OpenDoc parts." The WorldWrite container, scheduled to be available by the end of 1996, will be a full-featured version of the WorldWrite word processor with the additional benefits offered by OpenDoc technology. OpenDoc's open specifications and development framework will enable users to add OpenDoc parts, whether they are created by WorldSoft or other software developers. "We plan to implement OpenDoc in a manner that will allow users to create WorldWrite documents containing OpenDoc parts that can be saved and then reopened on a Macintosh that does not have OpenDoc installed. An embedded part would then appear in the document in a similar way to a graphic. "When the document is then returned and opened in WorldWrite on a Mac with OpenDoc installed, the OpenDoc parts would once again be active," Kewene-Hite said. "This will preserve the integrity of a document that is passed from machine to machine." Company officials said the OpenDoc version will be offered as both a full shipping product and as an upgrade from the currently shipping 3.0 version. No pricing or hardware requirements are available at this time.
