The Arab World (Arabic: العالم العربي; Transliteration: al-`alam al-`arabi) stretches from the Atlantic Ocean in the . This first-of-its-kind month-long series of public events features some of the most exciting Arab women writing today. Hammad Suheir Hammad was born in Amman, Jordan to parents that were Palestinian refugees on October 25 1973. Hammad’s family immigrated to Brooklyn in New York City when she was five years old. She grew up there, her parents later moving to Staten Island. (Palestine/U.S.), Choman Hardi Choman Hardi (1974- ), is a contemporary Kurdish poet, translator and painter. She was born in Sulaimaniya in Iraqi Kurdistan. In 1975 her family fled to Iran after the Algiers Accord but returned to Iraq after a general amnesty in 1979. (Iraqi Kurdistan/UK), Alia Mamdouh Alia Mamdouh also spelt Aliyah Mamduh (born 1944 in Baghdad, Iraq) to an Iraqi father and Syrian mother who both came from Tikrit and Alia grew up in the capital Baghdad. Women Writers of the Arab World provides access to the insights of writers who might not be heard here otherwise, as well as a context for intercultural education, dialogue, and enhanced understanding. These prominent visiting authors are spending four weeks writing at Hedgebrook's retreat on Whidbey Island Whid·bey Island An island of northwest Washington in Puget Sound northwest of Everett and east of Admiralty Inlet. , while offering the Seattle-area community a rare opportunity to hear their voices and engage in discussions at readings, lectures, receptions, panel discussions and book signings.
