World wide wet.Two major entities have launched efforts to improve water safety in regions around the world. On 22 March 2004, World Water Day, the European Union European Union (EU), name given since the ratification (Nov., 1993) of the Treaty of European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, to the European Community announced it would set up a 500 million [euro] Water Facility to promote access to clean water and sanitation sanitation: see plumbing; sanitary science. in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The facility will involve countries in developing national water policies and offer loans to build basic infrastructure. To help ensure safe drinking water drinking water supply of water available to animals for drinking supplied via nipples, in troughs, dams, ponds and larger natural water sources; an insufficient supply leads to dehydration; it can be the source of infection, e.g. leptospirosis, salmonellosis, or of poisoning, e.g. in Haiti, Pakistan, and Sudan, USAID USAID United States Agency for International Development USAID Agencia de los Estados Unidos para el Desarrollo Internacional (Spanish) and four other public and private organizations announced the $5 million Safe Drinking Water Alliance on 27 April 2004. The project will use an innovative coagulation/flocculation/disinfection water treatment system in its field work, which will focus on educational and marketing approaches to ensure that the new treatment systems get to those who need them the most. |
