a new study by The Freedonia Group. The report says that consumption will reach almost 9.5 million metric tons. Consumption totalled 7.75 mmt in 2004.

Tires account for more than two-thirds of carbon black consumption, and it is projected this sector will pass the six million metric ton mark in 2008. Non-tire rubber usage of carbon black is pegged to grow at a 4.3% rate in the same time period.

The Asia/Pacific region, excluding Japan, will post the strongest gains in carbon black demand through 2008. China and India will post impressive gains due to a continued rapid expansion in their respective motor vehicle and tire industries. These two countries saw the largest increases in new carbon black capacity over the 1998-2003 period, a trend that will continue through 2008 according to the study.

Demand for carbon black in the developed part of the world will continue to post below-average gains through the time period, with Japan holding the weakest prospects.
