It is hosted in the U.S. by the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT (www.csail.mit.edu/index.php). ) has issued Scalable Vector Graphics (graphics, World-Wide Web) Scalable Vector Graphics - A W3C standard for vector graphics, based on XML. http://w3.org/Graphics/SVG/. (SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) A vector graphics format from the W3C for the Web that is expressed in XML. Introduced in 2001, SVG was designed to become the standard vector format just as GIFs and JPEGs have become the standard bitmaps for the Web. ) 1.1 and Mobile SVG Profiles as W3C Candidate Recommendations. Advancement of these documents to Candidate Recommendation is a statement that the specifications are stable, and an invitation to the Web development community at large to make further implementations of SVG and provide technical feedback. SVG 1.1 separates SVG capabilities into reusable building blocks, and SVG Mobile re-combines them in a way optimized for mobile devices. SVG 1.1 Brings Modularization to Vector Graphics The graphical capabilities of SVG 1.1 are the same as those of the widely implemented SVG 1.0 , which has been a W3C Recommendation since 4 September 2001. What has changed is the way the language is defined. For SVG 1.0, the Document Type Definition (DTD (Document Type Definition) A language that describes the contents of an SGML document. The DTD is also used with XML, and the DTD definitions may be embedded within an XML document or in a separate file. ) was a single, monolithic unit. In SVG 1.1, the DTD is divided up into smaller, more flexible functional building blocks that can be reassembled in different ways for different purposes. The SVG Working Group The SVG Working Group is a working group created by the W3C to address the need for an alternative to the PostScript document format. These still fall short of the capabilities of desktop and laptop machines, but are now capable of displaying Web standard technologies such as XHTML (EXtensible HTML) A markup language for Web pages from the W3C. XHTML combines HTML and XML into a single format (HTML 4.0 and XML 1.0). Like XML, XHTML can be extended with proprietary tags. Public testing and implementation contribute to more robust Mobile SVG and SVG 1.1 specifications, and to more deployment on a wider variety of platforms.
