Jersey War Tunnels Staff Stay in Touch, Productive Using

IP-Enabled Wireless Solution

Staff of Jersey War Tunnels, an historic site devoted to preserving the story of Jersey's occupation by the Germans during World War II, can now stay in touch and stay productive even when they are not at their desks, thanks to a new mobile communications system In telecommunication, a communications system is a collection of individual communications networks, transmission systems, relay stations, tributary stations, and data terminal equipment (DTE) usually capable of interconnection and interoperation to form an integrated whole.  from Jersey Telecom and Nortel Networks (Nortel Networks Limited, Brampton, Ontario, www.nortelnetworks.com) A world leader in telecommunications products, which includes switching, wireless and broadband systems for service providers and carriers, telephones and systems for residential and business users, computer telephony  (NYSE NYSE

The new system provides mobile communications throughout the Jersey War Tunnels facility, which extends over seven acres and more than one kilometre deep into the Meadow bank Valley in St. Lawrence. This includes Ho8 (Hohlgangsanlage 8), the former German Underground Hospital located in a complex series of tunnels built using forced labor.

"The Nortel Networks system has given us the ultimate solution," said Paul Simmonds, general manager, Jersey War Tunnels. "We needed a truly versatile solution that would allow our staff to be completely mobile, providing efficient communications and safety to our visitors throughout the site, and particularly within the tunnels of Ho8."

The system is based on Nortel Networks Business Communications Manager, an Internet Protocol See Internet and TCP/IP.

"Finding a solution for Jersey War Tunnels was a fascinating project that allowed us to apply the latest communications technology Noun 1. communications technology - the activity of designing and constructing and maintaining communication systems

to a unique and unusual environment," said Guy Pipon, associate director, Business Solutions Group, Jersey Telecom. "We have provided a complete and 'future-proof' solution that will benefit both visitors and staff of the Tunnels and help maximise the experience of this valuable part of our Island's heritage."

"Nortel Networks is used to solving customer communications challenges of many kinds, but this must rate as one of the most unusual for any organization," said Andy Bills, vice president, Enterprise Sales, UK and Ireland, Nortel Networks. "Jersey War Tunnels' ability to extend the reach of their communication network throughout this historic underground location demonstrates that convergence really does eliminate traditional boundaries."

Jersey War Tunnels is the island's leading authenticator of the Occupation story, committed to preserving, recording and presenting the story of Jersey's Occupation, and to making its collection and research data more accessible to the public.

This key historic site has recently undergone major refurbishment and now offers visitors a complete experience of the story of Jersey's Occupation by German forces from 1940-1945. At the centre of the refurbishment is Ho8, which houses an award-winning permanent exhibition -- 'Captive Island' -- that tells the definitive story of the Occupation.
