At the end of the race there was an outpouring of relief, emotion, jubilation from the Brawn GP team, as Button said: "You don't win the world championship and feel relief, you feel ecstatic."

His father added: "He was crying his eyes out and saying 'I'm world champion.' That's all he was saying. No other words. We were like babies."

Formula One legend Sir Jackie Stewart led the tributes to Button.

"A big congratulations to Jenson Button, he did everything he had to do," Stewart said.

"He picked up nine places from his lowly grid position, he came through to clinch the world championship.

"I couldn't be happier for Jenson, it's 40 years since there's been a British champion back to back."
