Iraq militants target army, civilians

Bombers struck an Iraqi army post northeast of Baghdad, killing 10 Iraqi soldiers and injuring 10 others. In the capital, a car bomb exploded near Baghdad Univ., killing 8 people and wounding 19. Police also said the bullet-riddled bodies of 27 men were dumped in the capital, apparent victims of sectarian death squads.

JAPAN: Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Washington, D.C., for talks with President Bush on North Korea, Tokyo's expanding global role -- and maybe baseball and beef.

MEXICO: After Mexico City legalized abortion, an anti-abortion group vowed to keep pregnant women out of hospitals.

SYRIA: The government said the ruling coalition took a large majority of seats in parliamentary elections that were boycotted by the opposition.

ISRAEL: Police will query a wealthy Australian about charges Ehud Olmert tried to help him in a bank sale before Olmert became Israeli prime minister.
