WORLD'S LARGEST GUN DRILLER BEGINS OPERATION. Voith Paper, Heidenheim, Germany said that one and a half years after the decision had been made to buy the world's largest gun drilling machine (TIBO II) for Voith St. Polten, the machine began successful operation in June 2004. TIBO II, the largest single investment within the entire Voith group, will be used for machining suction roll shells. Hundreds of thousands of small holes are precisely drilled into the roll shell, helping to remove water from the web during the papermaking process and to apply a vacuum for holding the web to the roll. This investment was made to meet the demands of a market requiring increasingly wider paper machines. Using TIBO II, up to 176 drilling operations can be made in a single pass. This corresponds to a maximum drilled length of the suction roll shell of 12,600 mm.

* Huatai Paper's Dongying Mill, China has ordered a new production line, Paper Machine Number 11, from Voith Paper. Start-up is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2005. With its wire width of 10 200 mm, design speed of 2000 meters/minute, and high production capacity, Number 11 is will be one of the three largest paper machines in the world, based on Voith's One Platform Concept. The scope of Voith Paper's delivery will include the complete paper machine and a deinked pulp (DIP) line for processing 1000 metric tons/day of recovered paper. Automation is also included in the scope of supply for the PM 11. Voith provides the complete Machine Control System (MCS) as well as all CD controls.

* Stora Enso Publication Paper assigned Voith Paper Automation the contract for an upgrade to the quality control system of Coater 5 at its Kabel Mill in Hagen, Sweden. The purchase order includes the replacement of the existing quality control system with the Voith OnQ Quality Control System. Coaters 3 and 4 for top coat (Voith Dynamic Coater Stiff Blade) will be equipped with the ModuleCoat actuator system for coat weight cross direction control with 76 actuators each. A full service contract for 24 months including resident service with on-call service and uptime guarantee will ensure smooth operations.

* Voith received an order in May 2004 to rebuild Paper Machine Number 4 for, Korsnas AB, Sweden a paper and board producer. Supply scope includes a complete on-line coating machine with two CombiBlade coaters, including two ModuleCoater actuator systems, as well as a SpeedCoater and Krieger drying units. After the rebuild, the production line, which has mainly been used for sack papers, will produce high-quality liquid packaging board and white top liner.

* A fine paper machine for uncoated, woodfree fine paper, delivered by Voith Paper to Soporcel, Portugal in July 2000 is in the news again. The machine set a new world record of 1,583 meters/min on 21 June 2004 producing fine paper on the PM 2. This is the third record in as many years.

* UPM-Kymmene Austria GmbH, Steyrermuh, Austria has selected Voith Paper to boost plant capacity. The deinking plant, which was new three years ago, will now enhance stock preparation systems on lines Number 3 and 4, bringing finished stock capacity to 830 metric tons/day.
