Who needs red velvet seats and gold trimmed balconies? Peter Spading prefers the "raw, industrial ambience" of his company's new home--a converted factory in Ann Arbor Ann Arbor, city (1990 pop. 109,592), seat of Washtenaw co., S Mich., on the Huron River; inc. 1851. It is a research and educational center, with a large number of government and industrial research and development firms, many in high-technology fields such as , MI. The choreographer will inaugurate in·au·gu·rate

 the new studio/theater space on March 16-18 with the premiere of Schubert Songs. The work includes a cast of six men, a Schubert score, and a set of three Navy surplus bunk beds. Two of the men are from the seven-member Peter Spading Dance Company. The remaining four are students at the University of Michigan (body, education) University of Michigan - A large cosmopolitan university in the Midwest USA. Over 50000 students are enrolled at the University of Michigan's three campuses. The students come from 50 states and over 100 foreign countries.  Department of Dance, where Spading is a full professor. Spading, a former lead dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, stages her work for the Martha Graham Trust.

The Rudolf Arnheim Studio Theater, named for the famous Gestalt Gestalt (gəshtält`) [Ger.,=form], school of psychology that interprets phenomena as organized wholes rather than as aggregates of distinct parts, maintaining that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  psychologist who is Sparling's friend and mentor, seats 75-100. Spading hopes it will become a venue for the Ann Arbor fringe art scene, www.petersparlingdance.org.
