Workers, Abitibi ratify contract.

The collective agreement is in effect from May 1, 2004 to April 30, 2009 and includes an 11-per-cent wage increase phased in over the life of the agreement. The agreement also includes stipulations that increase the pension payments, representing increased labour costs for the company of 3.2 per cent over the first five years, plus an additional increase of 2.15 per cent in 2009. Employee contributions to the plan will also gradually increase over five years. Abitibi-Consolidated estimates the costs of the new agreement to be 14.3 per cent over those years.
