Work-site marketing: filling a need for employers and employees.

USAble (pronounced U-S-Able) Life continues to grow and find a niche among the insurance community where it provides supplemental health and life benefits to groups, and to individuals on a payroll deduction basis. Currently, USAble Life insures over 300,000 Arkansans - over 22 percent of Arkansas' work force.

Insuring more than one of every five employees makes USAble Life Arkansas' largest domestic group life insurance company. A subsidiary of Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield (An Independent Licensee of The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association), USAble Life began in 1980 as an Arkansas-based stock company chartered to write life, accident and health insurance. The company changed its name from Life of Arkansas to USAble Life in 1988 to better identify with its regional and national growth goals.

"USAble Life's growth has been highly successful over the past 14 years," said Jim House, USAble Life president and chief executive officer. In 1994 USAble Life's insurance in force increased to $3.8 billion, and the company again earned an "A" (Excellent) rating from the A.M. Best Company. Furthermore, the company has built a strong financial base with over $29 million in surplus funds. USAble Life's premium income increased by over 20 percent during 1994 while retained earnings increased by 15 percent.

"We have expanded our optional products to accommodate new opportunities presented with the use of work-site marketing," said House.

USAble Life also offers cafeteria plan administration as permitted through Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Code, allowing employees to pay for certain benefits with pre-tax dollars. These programs result in savings for both the employee and employer.

"With an emphasis on voluntary payroll deduction programs and employee selection of benefits, USAble Life has marketing and enrollment teams constantly on the road," House said. "These teams assist employers and individuals in cafeteria plan enrollments and in understanding every product we offer so they can more appropriately choose those products that fill their immediate and long term needs."

USAble Life is licensed to sell in 15 states and Puerto Rico. As a part of USAble's expansion plans, it recently began joint projects with Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in Hawaii, North Dakota and Iowa. Additional USAble Life sales offices are located in Jackson, Mississippi; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Nashville, Tennessee.
