Watch your step - this ain't no flip-flop affair.

But there's no rest for the weary. By the time the weeklong event at the fairgrounds n. pl. 1. same as fairground.  is over, more than 16 garbage-truck loads of manure and messed hay will be hauled away.

"I'm always sweeping," said 12-year-old Sarah, who has been up before the sun every day of the fair. "We're up at 5:30, and then it's chore time, watering and feeding stock, and cleaning and caring for the animals."

The fair, which began July 13 and finished Saturday night with a livestock auction, is special because it marks the culmination of 4-H members' yearlong effort to prepare their projects for judging. With 48 project categories, covering everything from cooking to computers, the kids want people to know that 4-H doesn't just mean four hooves.

"It's about more than sheep and agriculture," said Mike Olson, 17, of Pleasant Hill. "It broadens into all areas including leadership and public speaking."

But many 4-H kids, including Olson, are devoted to animals. And thanks to the constant lullaby of bleating bleat

For Mike, who has won the grand championship for sheep showmanship the last two years and was runner-up this year, 4-H is a family affair. His 15-year-old sister, Kim, who shows sheep for market and breeding, said it's always been in the family.

Their mother, Barb Olson, said 4-H has made a real difference for her four children, two of whom preceded Mike and Kim in Kim In (김인, 金寅 born November 23, 1943) is a professional Go player. Biography

"People come up and say you have such good kids, and I know part of that is because of this program," she said. "They've learned to present themselves and they've learned responsibility.

And what about all that work?

"They do learn their chores," Olson said. "And they don't have time to get into mischief. That's part of the joy," she added with a laugh.

Mike cut to the quick.

There were 550 entrants in this year's fair with more than 4,000 exhibits, including clothing, cooking, woodworking and animals.

The animals make it all worthwhile for Sarah, who takes a break from the grip on her broom to explain how 4-H differs from other school-aged activities.

"This is more of a year-round thing," she said. "I have to get up early and work all day, so it seems like there's more work and more responsibility. But I do it because I love the animals. I just love the animals."
