Words worth quoting.

John Booth, superintendent of Levelland, Texas Levelland is a city in Hockley County, Texas, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 12,866. It is the county seat of Hockley CountyGR6. It is located on the Llano Estacado, west of Lubbock. , gave me a copy of Charles Slater's guest column, "What Does It Mean To Be an Educated Person?" (September 2005) when discussing the current challenge facing our public schools in finding the balance between meeting national testing standards and the desire to educate our students in citizenship, leadership, morality and issues beyond those on standardized tests A standardized test is a test administered and scored in a standard manner. The tests are designed in such a way that the "questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent" [1] .

I wanted to thank the author for this column as I have often referred to it in the months since. His words are sincerely appreciated as are his insights into a few ideals that are worthy of pursuit toward creating an educated community. I am looking forward to future issues and have enjoyed sharing this article as this discussion has continued and developed.
