It was a time of turmoil; protests were so unruly that Mayor Richard J. Daley dispatched nearly 12,000 police officers to maintain order. At the convention, Democrats had to choose a candidate for president. President Lyndon B. Johnson had announced that he wouldn't seek reelection, and front-runner Robert F.
