Wood salutes Harry D. Tiemann. (From the Archives).

It is doubtful that there is any method of drying lumber lumber, term for timber that has been cut into boards for use as a building material. The major steps in producing lumber involve logging (the felling and preparation of timber for shipment to sawmills), sawing the logs into boards, grading the boards according to  today that Harry D. Tiemann, retired, of the Forest Products Laboratory, Madison Madison, cities, United States

, WI, hasn't explored. His books and writings are known throughout the country, and in fact, the world where kiln drying is given any attention.

His book, The Kiln Drying of Lumber, first published in 1917, set forth all the basic principles which are followed today in proper kiln drying. The only advance since then is probably the stepping up of the treatment as to intensity, and in this phase Mr. Tiemann also contributed a great deal by his research.

Mr. Tiemann set forth the need of proper control of humidity humidity, moisture content of the atmosphere, a primary element of climate. Humidity measurements include absolute humidity, the mass of water vapor per unit volume of natural air; relative humidity (usually meant when the term humidity  in conjunction with proper temperature. His is also reputed reputed adj. referring to what is accepted by general public belief, whether or not correct.  to be the first person to use high humidity treatment at the end of the drying period to relieve stress and case hardening Case hardening or surface hardening is the process of hardening the surface of a metal, often a low carbon steel, by infusing elements into the material's surface, forming a thin layer of a harder alloy. . It was one of the outstanding achievements in drying gun stocks whereby stress was relieved so that the gun stock would be straight without having to burn it straight as had been done previously.
