The grant enables Womenspace to reap a $195,000 "topping off" grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust announced three weeks ago. Individuals also recently donated enough to meet the challenge of a separate $50,000 matching grant matching grant Academia Non-peer-reviewed funding in which a commercial enterprise, foundation, or philanthropy, federal government, contributes a sum of money that 'matches' a financial contribution made by an institution, university or hospital.  from the Collins Foundation.

"Between the Collins grant and the Spirit Mountain Community Fund, we're to the point we'll get the Meyer Memorial Trust Grant. It really works in pieces. Everybody helps," Womenspace Development Director Elaine Phillips said Friday.

With its building paid for, Womenspace can now devote the former rent portion of its budget to expand its core advocacy, shelter and educational programs, Phillips said.

"We have marveled at all the people who have helped us. We have people who just put on fundraisers for us," she added.

A recent example is the 60-member hip-hop dance group Dance Northwest, which raised $800 with an event last month. But local individuals and businesses also have put a pile of cash into the group's capital campaign, she said.

Phillips said private trusts, such as the Spirit Mountain fund, play huge roles in patching and expanding community safety net programs.
