Women of influence 2007.For the sixth consecutive year, Saskatchewan Business Magazine is pleased to recognize some of the province's most influential women. As the accompanying graphics indicate, by virtue of their attributes and accomplishments, these women are all worthy of cover stories in our magazine. Sue Barber A partner with the firm of McDougall Gauley, her law career was paved by growing up in a household where public policy and business issues were front and centre. She sits on the board of governors for the University of Regina History Origins In direct response to the award of the University of Saskatchewan to Saskatoon rather than Regina, the Methodist Church of Canada established Regina College in 1911 on College Avenue in Regina, Saskatchewan, starting with an enrollment of 27 students; and serves as a bencher BENCHER, English law. A bencher is a senior in the inns of court, entrusted with their government and direction. for the Law Society of Saskatchewan. Some of her other board influences include those for the 2003 Grey Cup, RCMP Heritage Centre The RCMP Heritage Centre (French: Le Centre du patrimoine de la GRC) was officially opened May 23, 2007 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Loretta Elford Since retiring as director of education in the Regina Public School system, she has remained active in the broader community through organizations including: the Hospitals of Regina Foundation, the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Authority, the United Way and the Salvation Army. She is a charter member of the board of directors of Conexus Credit Union, sitting on its executive, audit, community development and policy committees and serves as a commissioner on the Public Complaints Commission. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Nola Joorisity As CEO of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Saskatchewan this CA has played a potent role in shaping the public policy of this province. Under her guidance, the institute created its Saskatchewan Check Up series and hers was a strong voice that called for the tax reform commissions--on personal and corporate taxes--that cleared the way for a major overhaul of the taxation system in the past five or six years. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Holly Ann Knott A partner in the Saskatoon law firm of Knott den Hollander and Queen's Counsel, she is active in various legal profession organizations as well as the broader community with stints on the boards of the Mendel Art Gallery The Mendel Art Gallery is a major creative cultural centre in City Park, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, opened in 1964. Housing a permanent collection of works of local, regional and national significance, the Mendel is also known for its public programmes for all ages. and the University of Saskatchewan The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) is a coeducational public research university located on the east side of the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The University is celebrating its centennial year in 2007. senate. She currently serves as vice-chair of the board of the Saskatchewan Transportation Company The Saskatchewan Transportation Company is a Crown Corporation of the Government of Saskatchewan. History STC was created by Government Order-in-Council in 1946. The crown corporation is responsible for moving of people and freight in the province. . [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Deb McDonald As the deputy minister of Saskatchewan Property Management she oversees the agency charged with looking after the provincial government's procurement, transportation and property needs but, as a former chief of staff to the Premier, she knows the inner workings of all elements of provincial administration. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Barb Pollock A high-profile member of the Regina business community, her communications expertise led to a senior executive position with the University of Regina in charge of reputation management for the university. As vice-president (External Relations) she has provided leadership for the successful $75-million Building Dreams and Futures fundraising campaign, and is responsible for alumni relations and university and public affairs. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Ellen Remai One who generally avoids the spotlight, she is a successful businesswoman and community builder. She has quietly become a major force in the Western Canadian real estate development sector. Ellen is increasingly focusing her energy on philanthropy through her leadership of the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Anne Taylor A career banker, Anne has worked in Ontario, Manitoba, and for the last 16 years, in Saskatchewan. Anne most recently took on the role of regional manager, TD Waterhouse Financial Planning Financial planning Evaluating the investing and financing options available to a firm. Planning includes attempting to make optimal decisions, projecting the consequences of these decisions for the firm in the form of a financial plan, and then comparing future performance against for Saskatchewan. At home in Saskatchewan, Anne has been actively involved in the hockey community, various Canadian Bankers Association The Canadian Bankers Association is an organization representing Canada's chartered banks and provides services to improve the wellbeing of its membership (banking lobby, policy development, research and support) and to consumers of banking services. sub-committees, as well as TD Bank's Friends of the Environment chapter. She presently sits on the board of directors for the Saskatchewan Children's Health and Hospital Foundation.
