Women in Distress of Broward County To Hold the Starfish Awards.


To Honor Community Members Making a Difference One Person at a Time

FORT LAUDERDALE Fort Lauderdale (lô`dərdāl), residential, commercial, and resort city (1990 pop. 149,377), seat of Broward co., SE Fla., on the Atlantic coast; settled around a fort built (c.1837) in the Seminole War, inc. 1911. , Fla. -- Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. announced today that over 300 people are anticipated to join forces to raise funds to aid men, women and children who are victims of domestic violence and recognize special honorees at the First Annual Starfish Luncheon, presented by Maroone.

The Women In Distress First Annual Starfish Luncheon will honor special supporters who are helping to make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims. The program will be emceed by WSVN's anchor Lynn Martinez and Randy Rogers. Honorees will include BankAtlantic and Alan Levan and Susie Levan as Corporate Citizens; Silvia Mansons, founder of Women In Distress Auxiliary auxiliary

The First Annual Starfish Luncheon will take place on Monday, May 14, 2007, at the Bahia Mar, 801 SeaBreeze Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. Registration and a Silent Auction will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by the program and luncheon beginning at 12:00 noon.

Funds raised through the luncheon will support the Women In Distress emergency shelter Emergency shelters are places for people to live temporarily when they can't live in their previous residence, similar to homeless shelters. The main difference is that an emergency shelter typically specializes in people fleeing a specific type of situation, such as battered  and supportive services to victims and their children in addition to domestic violence prevention and education activities surrounding sur·round
