Women cabbies hit the road in Mumbai.


On a busy day in Mumbai Mumbai (mmbī`, mm`bī), formerly Bombay (bŏmbā`), city (1991 pop.  it is difficult for women to look for a cab and many women are made to feel uncomfortable by male drivers. In response, Forsche, a new luxury taxi service for women only has been launched. The cabs will operate from 8 am till 8 pm and will be aimed at corporate elites and hotel establishments. The woman only ride, however, comes at a price.

In India India, officially Republic of India, republic (2005 est pop. 1,080,264,000), 1,261,810 sq mi (3,268,090 sq km), S Asia. The second most populous country in the world, it is also sometimes called Bharat, its ancient name. India's land frontier (c.  a regular cab charges at least 800 rupees for eight hours, while an air conditioned cab costs up to 2,000 rupees for the same period. Forsche, a play on the German luxury carmaker Porsche, plans on charging 4,000 rupees for 12 hours, a price many feel is too steep for a bit of luxury and safety. "I don't think it will do well. It is too expensive. It is a bad idea," said a woman. "If it becomes a little more cost effective then it will work well. Women taxi drivers taxi driver ntaxista m/f
