Wollow the last Guineas winner; 4.00 GREENHAM STAKES.

Byline: Jon Lees

THE longer established of Newbury's two Guineas warm-ups, the Greenham Stakes, sponsored this year by Bathwick Tyres, has been in the programme book for 102 years.

However, not since Wollow in 1976 has the winner of the race succeeded at Newmarket a few weeks later.

It has produced some notable overseas performers, though. Victory Note won the Poule d'Essai des Poulains after winning the 1998 Greenham, while Celtic Swing (1995) won the Prix du Jockey-Club and Turtle Island (1994) the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

The dam of Muthabara, who contests today's Dubai Duty Free Stakes, is a half-sister to Muqbil, winner of the 2003 Greenham Stakes, who could finish only 12th in the 2,000 Guineas.
