Wolfson Releases World's Leading Feature-Rich Integrated Multichannel CODEC for AV Systems.

SAN DIEGO & EDINBURGH, United Kingdom -- Wolfson Microelectronics plc (LSE LSE - Language Sensitive Editor :WLF.L) today released the WM8777, the latest generation of its multi-channel CODEC family. The WM8777 leads the industry in integrated audio signal processing Audio signal processing, sometimes referred to as audio processing, is the processing of a representation of auditory signals, or sound. The representation can be digital or analog.  capability. When combined with a commercially available DSP, this single mixed-signal device provides all the major audio functions for next generation of 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1 Audio-Visual systems, including DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

S/PDIF is typically used to transmit PCM and Dolby Digital 5.1, but is not tied to any sampling rate or audio standard. ) of its type, as well as bass management, stereo mix-down, tone and volume control for both 5.1 analogue inputs and digital playback sources. The WM8777 is also the only commercially available chip of this kind to provide a secondary audio interface, which allows the S/PDIF interface to run independently of the CODEC audio interface, a vital feature simplifying customer designs.

"The WM8777 integrates the functions of what is currently often done in 3 separate devices," said Jason Coughlan. "By integrating these functions alongside leading S/PDIF performance and the unique secondary interface, WM8777 is the logical choice for customers wishing to reduce design complexity and save cost. No other solution can offer this package of benefits."

Each of the 8 DAC channels has a Master Volume Control, with a gain range of +20dB to -100dB in 1dB steps. The WM8777 provides full 7.1 Channel support or 5.1 operation, whilst simultaneously supporting auxiliary remote room audio. Sampling rates range from 8kHz to 192kHz and the integrated stereo headphone amplifier includes source selection. A single serial interface on the WM8777 provides access to all the features and extensive digital routings offer additional flexibility.

Price and Availability

The WM8777 is available in a 100-pin TQFP See QFP.  package priced at $7.34 (US) in quantities of 10,000.
