Wolfson Microelectronics plc Introduces 192kHz Digital Audio Interface Products for Audio Applications.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN DIEGO & EDINBURGH, Scotland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 2003

Wolfson Microelectronics plc today introduced two new digital audio interface products for the consumer audio and professional markets. The WM8803 digital audio receiver and the WM8802 digital audio transmitter allow manufacturers to integrate 192kHz S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital InterFace) A serial interface for transferring digital audio from CD and DVD players to amplifiers and TVs. S/PDIF is typically used to transmit PCM and Dolby Digital 5.1, but is not tied to any sampling rate or audio standard.  solutions on to their design.

These products are intended to be ideal solutions to target consumer and professional applications such as audio/video receivers, DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

receivers, DVD-R/W players, personal video recorders (PVRs), portable music players and digital mixing consoles.

"The WM8803 and WM8802 enable a new level of audio performance for the next generation of digital entertainment systems," said David Milne, Wolfson's CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and managing director. "More and more we see systems manufacturers looking to Wolfson to explore, leverage and develop high performance new audio components for optimal digital solutions on their products."

The WM8803 is a digital audio interface receiver conforming to IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission, Geneva, Switzerland, www.iec.ch) An organization that sets international electrical and electronics standards founded in 1906. It is made up of national committees from over 60 countries.

CP-1201. The WM8803 receives and decodes digital audio data with sample rates up to 192 kHz and utilizes a low jitter clock recovery mechanism to yield a clean recovered clock from the incoming audio stream. The WM8803 is a single input device but also a flexible digital output port that allows the user access to channel status pre-emphasis information, input signal sampling frequency, sub-code Q data with the associated CRC (Cyclical Redundancy Checking) An error checking technique used to ensure the accuracy of transmitting digital data. The transmitted messages are divided into predetermined lengths which, used as dividends, are divided by a fixed divisor.  flags and other status data. It provides several low-power modes, supporting applications that require long battery life, such as portable audio devices and PDAs.

The WM8802 digital audio transceiver accepts and encodes audio and digital data, which is then multiplexed, encoded and driven onto a cable/optical transmission interface. Data input to the serial digital-audio data input pin can also be modulated using the on-board PLL or with the use of an external clock source. The WM8802 can support up to six data inputs and 1 data output which provides a number of flag outputs including PCM data valid, de-emphasis, lock and IEC 61937, DTS-CD/LD detection.

WM8803 and WM8802 are fully compatible with EIAJ CP1201, IEC60958/61937, S/PDIF and AES3 standards. Both digital audio interface products have 5V tolerant digital inputs and operate from a 3.3V power supply and allow for stand-alone operation in systems with no microcontroller. Finally, WM8803 and WM8802 are designed with the intention of being the perfect companion chips for products like the WM8772 and the WM8770 audio CODECs for the target applications mentioned above.

Price and Availability

The WM8803 and WM8802 are available in 24-pin TSSOP TSSOP Thin Shrink Small Outline Package
