Andrew said it considers this effort essential to coordinating its worldwide sales and manufacturing efforts. "We wanted a scalable computing architecture that could support our current worldwide rollout, as well as the 30 to 40 percent increase in processing power we will need when we upgrade to the newest SAP Release 4.5," said John Phelan, manager, M.I.S. Domestic Operations, Andrew Corporation. "This platform, powered by HP's 440MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. , 64-bit, PA-8500 processors, establishes a new performance threshold that can handle both geographic and vertical expansion."

In addition to being one of the fastest servers in the world, the V2500 is also one of the most flexible. Each V2500 server can be equipped with up to 32 64-bit, PA-8500 processors and features the HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family. Four years ago, Andrew selected HP to satisfy its capacity and reliability needs for business-critical SAP applications. "HP provides the high-powered computing platforms needed to run database-intensive applications like SAP. In addition, they provided us with the quality systems support that makes daily operations, upgrades and special projects run smoothly," said Phelan.

When Andrew recently upgraded to the V-Class platform, for example, it simultaneously upgraded from 32-bit HP-UX 10.2 to the robust 64-bit HP-UX 11 operating environment.
